Horse racing is a sport that is practised all over the world, and it is extremely popular, not just with those who ride horses or own them, but with those who go along for the day to racing events, to watch the horses and to places bets on who they believe will win. There are a number of great horse racing events that constitute a significant part of the sport’s calendar and where individuals hope to win large amounts of money.

The Grand National

This is a British horse race that takes place each year in April at the Aintree racecourse in Liverpool, England. This is one of the most popular horse races in the UK. This race first took place in 1839 and is run over a total distance of around four miles. A steeplechase, the horses have to successfully negotiate around 30 fences as they go twice around the course.

The Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby takes place in Louisville, Kentucky each year on the first weekend of May. It is three-year-old thoroughbred horses that are eligible to take part at the Churchill Downs course, and the distance run is around one and a quarter miles.

The Dubai World Cup

This event started life in 1996 and takes place each year. It is run at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, and it boasts one of the highest payouts for winners. The event is run over a distance of two kilometres, and spectators from all over the world fly in to watch.

Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

This annual flat race takes place at the Longchamp racing course in Paris for thoroughbred horses aged three and over. Run over a distance of 2.4 kilometres, this event takes place on the first weekend of October, and the winner can expect to take home almost three million euros.
